What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of addiction? Illegal drugs? Prescription drugs? Alcohol? Gambling? Yes each of those we can become addicted to. There are many other things we can become addictied to. Have you ever known someone who seems to work all the time and doesn't take much time for anything else? What about shopping? Many people shop for things they don't even need. It is like they are trying to fill their lives with something they can see and feel. Something tangible. There are so many things we can become addicted to easily. Why you might ask?
My addiction has always been food. With a lot of peronal work on my life I can now pinpoint where it most likely began. When I was born there was a lot of excitement about me being the first girl in 40 years on my Dad's side of the family. My Dad was very proud. Soon after I was born he found out he had testicular cancer and he died 4 days before I turned a year old. My Mom, who was a teacher, kind of lost herself and went a little crazy in her behaviour. She would take my brother and I to one of our aunts or grandma and take off to enjoy herself in bars.Sometimes she would take us with her. Many times my aunt would come looking for us and take us to her place. One time, at about 2 years old , my mother left me in a bar in a storage room on a cot to sleep. It took a long time for me to figure this out as an adult but I remember a man who worked there tried to molest me. To shut me up he gave me food/candy. Now this may seem too simple to start an addiction but food became my security. Sometimes addiction makes no sense but if someone is willing to look deep enough we can usually find a reason. Then we can make change. I still struggle with my addiction to food but I am so much better than I used to be.
If you have an addiction issue we are here and very willing to talk without any judgements.
Sincerely,
Nancy
